African Lion (Panthera leo)

The second largest of the five “Big Cats”, the African lion (Panthera leo) is also know as the “King of the Jungle”. Actually the African lion is found more often on the African savanna grassland than in Africa’s jungles. The African lion is an apex predator, although the African lion faces some competition from spotted hyena (Crocuta crocuta). The lion is found only in Africa, except for a few hundred Asian lions (Panthera leo) living in the Gir National Park of India.
